In 2002 the renowned artist Mona Hatoum created the “Grater Divide”. Whatever the artist’s intentions and concepts might be, What IF we take this artwork as a thought-provoking departure point: How our assumptions become mental barriers that create divides and separation? The violent act of grating deforms the processed material: how do our assumptions become our sources of emotional distress? How our visuality (how we see, how we are allowed or trained to see) shape the way we think about the future? Like the narrow and sharp holes of a grater, how our visuality distorts our perceptions of reality? Do we hide behind our firm mindset permitting our assumptions to limit our potential and the available possibilities? What IF we turn the Grater Divide into a mechanism that deconstructs our visuality; sheds light on our perspectives, perceptions and assumptions; and supports us to expand our present and explore alternative futures?
