The most limiting barrier to positive change isn’t a lack of resources, but a poverty of imagination and anticipation. This is where Futures Literacy—the capability to use the future to innovate in the present—converges powerfully with Visual Literacy. We tend to anticipate a future based on pre-established patterns, using images and concepts that reinforce the very challenges we seek to overcome. This confines us to a mental “box” where the future is merely an extension of the known past.
My work is to equip individuals and communities with the tools to see beyond the surface. By exploring our visualities, we expose the default, hidden assumptions that govern our planning and decision-making. Learning to ask “What if?” through a visual lens unlocks new mental models, allowing us to spot tacit possibilities and radical opportunities for growth and innovation, transforming the ambiguous unknown into a space of empowered choice.
