Visuality is not merely sight. It is the profound, often unconscious, process of how we see and make sense. It is the regulator of our reality. To truly master our future, we must become archaeologists of our own seeing. Our cultural and personal past, replete with inherited social norms and collective narratives, floods the present through every visual we encounter. These images—whether a painting, a photograph, adverts, or even a news graphic — are active agents that anchor our understanding of the world, shaping our thought patterns, guiding our emotions, and consequently, dictating our choices.
The unique Visual Literacy methodology and tools I advocate focus on excavating the origins of our perceptions and assumptions. Only by deconstructing the visualities that limit our thinking can we transcend inherited barriers, foster emancipated thought, and cultivate the agency necessary to define a more fulfilling reality. We must learn to see the unseen.
